Why Diets Don’t Work

Over the years I have tried numerous diets, liquid diets, diet pills, calorie counting, high protein, egg diets, soup diets, low fat diets to name just a few and overall none of them have worked!

Sure enough I have lost weight but never managed to reach my goal or keep the weight off I had lost, so I decided to examine what went wrong and identify why diets don’t work.

For me, the main reason why diets haven’t worked is because I am on a “prescriptive” diet and therefore I would constantly be thinking about food all the time! The more I thought about food, the more I craved those foods that were “forbidden” or deemed to be “sinful” so much so I go and totally overindulge in those “bad” foods and then feel really guilty about it afterwards.

Secondly, no matter what diet I tried, I found that I just wasn’t eating enough and without realising was slowing my metabolism so fat burned off at a slower rate. I also found that I was too tired to exercise which didn’t help.

So therefore I came to the conclusion that diets really don’t work, well certainly not for me anyway. I realised that the only way I would lose weight would be to totally change the way I think about food and completely change my eating habits, but how could I achieve what seemed to be an impossible task.

Searching on the internet one day I came across a self hypnosis CD for stopping smoking and thought if there is a self hypnosis method to stop smoking, was there one for weight loss. Sure enough I came across a self hypnosis CD for weight loss. I thought I’ve tried everything else, why not give it a go.

The CD arrived and I followed the instructions listening to it every night before I went to bed, however with a degree of cynicism. I listened to the voice on the recording and let myself slip into a deeply relaxed state and following the instructions as they were spoken.

When the recording had finished, I felt great! Totally refreshed and feeling much better about myself. I did this each night before I went to bed for a month and on odd occasions through the day. The programme offered no “quick fix” or miracle diets but it helped reprogram the way I feel about food.

The results were fantastic! I managed to lose 7lbs in the first week and then have maintained a healthy weight loss of 1-2lbs per week and have had plenty of energy to get some exercise in and have even ate foods that were deemed to be “forbidden” on other weight loss plans! Its not a “get thin quick” programme, but then again those programmes don’t work long term, lose weight quickly, gain weight even quicker!

My conclusion therefore is that diets really don’t work. The healthiest and most sustainable way to lose weight is to rethink your overall eating habits (in my case with the help of self hypnosis). I don’t constantly think about food, I don’t get cravings for “forbidden” foods and I feel much healthier in general.
