So You Went Off Your Diet How to Get Back On and Stay On! By Linda Ford
So, it was your best friend’s birthday. You took her out for dinner and maybe you did over-indulge “a little.” (Just couldn’t resist that creme brulee?) Or maybe you were on a business trip and it just wasn’t practical to stick with your diet with all the airplanes, hotels, and crazy schedules.
Don’t beat yourself up about it. The main thing is to get back on the horse. That is, get back to your intention to eat in a healthy, moderate way. When you step off your diet for whatever reason, it is NOT the end of the world. It’s not even the end of your weight loss program!
Most dieters give in to temptation at some point on the way to reaching their weight loss goals. The fact that you were tempted and gave in is not the issue; it’s how you move on from this point. So many decide, “oh well, I cheated it’s over” when you should really say, “Ok, I messed up, I’m starting again tomorrow.”
Here are some tips to recover from your slip-up:
* Maintain perspective – It may seem major but it doesn’t have to be. Don’t dwell on what happened – move on. The more you beat yourself up for the slip, the harder it is to get going again.
* Get some healthy weight loss snacks or meal substitutes to help you out. If it’s easy to grab a quick and healthy snack, you’ll be less likely to snack on things you’ll regret later. Cinch Plan (http://www.cinchplan.com/ourplanet) has a great set of choices!
* Plan Ahead – Business trips, vacations, working late at the office, whatever the situation, plan your meals and snacks ahead of time. That way you’ll feel more in control and be less likely to splurge again.
* Learn from your mistakes – A mistake is only a mistake if you don’t learn from it. Think about the choices you made and learn what you need to do to support yourself in sticking with your plan.
The biggest risk of your splurge isn’t the splurge. It’s the possibility that you could decide to give up your new healthy habits. Don’t do it! You have a choice to let this be a one-time slip not the end of the road. So get back on the horse and this time be sure you ride a little longer before you slip off.
